![]() ![]() ![]() rantĪs engineers we are (typically) poorly educated about a holistic approach to problem solving in the real world of capitalistic, market driven businesses. I'm sorry, but that's just too damned bad. So I'm of the opinion I shouldn't have to limit my tools and knowledge because someone not as knowledgeable as me might have to work on it. Never once in my six years did I call in an OEM to service our equipment. I guess I don't have much sympathy for that situation because I was in maintenance, and if I ran into something unfamiliar, I had to learn. But at the same time, I hate this attitude of simplifying everything to the lowest common denominator because heaven forbid a maintenance guy is forced to learn something new. ![]() I get that there's definitely something to be said for uniformity and making it easy for the tech guy. Just use ladder." It's frustrating to me that this potentially powerful tool is just sitting out there not being used because people are so damn attached to ladder (tHaT's tHe wAy wE'vE AlWaYs dONe iT syndrome). It would have been so much easier in SFC.Įvery time I've suggested using it, the reaction I get is basically "I don't know what that is. One time, I had to rearrange one of my sequences on an existing machine in ladder, and it was a freaking nightmare. It takes so much time to scroll through large sequences just to figure out where you are. I've played around with it, and I think it's hard to beat for having an overview of the sequence. The only time I've ever seen it in the wild is on a customer's DCS. I have yet to find a single CE in real life who even knows about, let alone, uses SFC.
